Eligibility
The last day to apply to The Road Home program was July 31, 2007. Applicants who qualify for the program meet these requirements:
- The applicants owned and occupied the home as their main residence at the time of Hurricanes Katrina (August 29, 2005) or Rita (September 24, 2005)
- The applicant’s home at the time of the storm was a single-unit structure, double-unit structure, or condominium (this includes duplexes where the owner resides in one of the units)
- The damage to the applicant’s home met one of the following FEMA eligibility requirements, depending on when the homeowner’s option letter was dated:
- June 12, 2007 or prior
- Home was identified by FEMA as having sustained major or severe damage OR
- If not classified by FEMA or improperly classified, the home sustained at least $5,200 of damage from the storms as determined by the Road Home
- After June 12, 2007
- Home identified by FEMA as having sustained major or severe damage OR
- Home destroyed or Road Home inspector determined it required rebuilding OR
- If not classified by FEMA or improperly classified, home sustained:
- At least 601 square feet of roof damage, OR
- Home had more than 1 foot of water of 1st occupied floor, OR
- Home sustained damages that have major affect on structural integrity
Homeowners who were uninsured but should have carried insurance (for example, those who lived in a flood plain but did not have flood insurance) are eligible for the program, but they will incur a 30 percent penalty.
Multi-unit buildings containing three and four units, with one unit occupied by the property owner and the others rented to other individuals, are processed through the Small Rental Property program.
The Small Renal Property Program provides assistance to the owner occupied unit as well as the rental units in 3 and 4 unit rental properties.
